“Maruyama Okyo: Beyond Realism, A Spatial Revolution” is a special exhibition marking the Edo-Tokyo Musem’s reopening after renovations. It focuses on the Edo-period painter known for his detailed studies of nature and inventive use of perspectives

It traces Okyo’s career through works depicting animals, plants and landscapes. A highlight is the large-scale set of sliding-door and wall paintings he made for Daijoji Temple in Hyogo Prefecture.

These pieces reveal how Okyo moved past realism—turning whole rooms into connected pictorial spaces.

General admission at the door is 2,100 yen. Advance tickets cost 1,900 yen and are on sale until November 27. Visitors aged 65 and over pay 1,600 yen, and university and vocational students pay 1,300 yen. Entry is free for high school students and younger.
