Theatre Nohgaku Premieres English Noh Play “Bae Bong-gi”

International troupe Theatre Nohgaku presents the premiere of “Bae Bong-gi,” a contemporary noh play performed in English. Inspired by Fumiko Kawata’s biographical testimony “House with a Red Tile Roof” (Akagawara no ie), the play follows the life of Bae Bong-gi, a Korean woman taken by deceit to serve as a “comfort woman” in Okinawa during the Pacific War.

While the play touches on difficult historical subject matter, Kanagawa Shinbun critic Akiko Kashio noted in a review of a preview performance that its effect was “not to provoke political debate, but to convey the humanity of the victimized women.” Some audience members have said they were moved to tears, with their understanding of the issue growing “not just changed but deeper.”

The production features masks crafted by master artisans Hideta Kitazawa and Sanjiro Kitazawa, with special appearances by Kita school noh actor Sadamu Omura and Izumi school kyogen actor Tadashi Ogasawara.
