Aside from an unhealthy obsession with handbags, what do Japanese and French women have in common? On the surface, perhaps not a lot, but as the current government’s policies indicate, Japan is learning from France’s experience in dealing with gender discrimination and a declining birthrate. To celebrate the March 8 International Women’s Day, the Nikkei newspaper and French Embassy are presenting Femmes@Tokyo, a month-long series of film screenings, exhibitions, concerts and symposia. The event launches with a showing of six French films dealing with gender issues, and French cinema doyenne Catherine Deneuve will be presenting a talk show on the occasion of the screening of her recent film, Mères et Filles.
