Setting aside the fact that Twitter tends to divide opinion in much the same way as natto or Marmite, it’s definitely notable that the US firm is planning a Japan-specific mobile version of the microblogging site for some time near the end of 2009.

Twitter’s mobile head honcho, Kevin Thau, dropped in on the Nikkei recently and ’fessed up to the dev plans, admitting that the growing popularity of the 140-char updates made the move to “いまなにしてる?” by phone inevitable.

While there’s already a Japanese interface for the PC version of Twitter, a mobile iteration could just push the service over the edge here—and Mixi et. al. to the brink.
