After unveiling a banana vending machine at Shibuya station last summer, Dole is back in the news with a piece of fruit developed specifically for this weekend’s Tokyo Marathon. The new-style banana was created in the Philippines, where, according to the company, growers played “runners’ favorite songs… to help in cultivation and to make it even tastier.” Which begs the question: what music do you play for a banana to make it taste better? Dole says the top songs are Zard’s early-’90s anthem “Makenaide”; the theme to Rocky; and, perhaps inevitably, Queen’s “We are the Champions.” Even if you’re not participating in the marathon, you can pick up a bunch of the bananas at area grocers, including Maruman, Tobu, Ito Yokado and Fuji.
