Even as Ginza goes downmarket, the neighborhood looks to preserve its élan with a jazz festival all its own. Launched five years ago, GIJF brings top-flight musicians to the area for five days of free concerts. Leading the bill from abroad are Chico & The Gypsies, featuring former Gipsy King frontman Chico Bouchikhi, Alaskan chanteuse Halie Loren, and Brazilian songstress Catia. Performances with a Latin bent arrive courtesy of quintet Rhythmatrix and Japanese violinist Katsuki Sayaka, who was invited to Cuba by the Buena Vista Social Club.
“Ginza International Jazz Festival”
6th edition of the annual festival features Chico & The Gypsies, vocalist Halie Loren and others. Oct 30-Nov 3. Various venues. www.ginza.jp/ginzajazz/
