UK-born Haroon Mirza grew up in a Pakistani culture where many frowned on music. His response? Become a sound installation artist. Working with sound, objects, and space, Mirza’s creations incorporate anything from furniture to appliances and mix light and video with lo-fi electronic sounds to create intricate assemblages. His goal is to explore the boundaries between music, sound, and noise to mirror post-industrial, wired society. This is Japan’s first look at Mirza, the 2011 recipient of the Silver Lion for promising young artists at the 54th Venice Biennale.
