Fresh off playing a salaryman dead set on revenge in Hideki Noda’s The Bee, Kathryn Hunter returns to Setagaya to star in Colin Teevan’s Kafka’s Monkey. Based on the Kafka story “A Report to an Academy,” the play portrays a lecturer reminiscing about his forced evolution from ape to man. As is often the case with Kafka, the work amounts to a damning indictment of “man’s inhumanity to man.” Hunter drew rave reviews for her portrayal of the ape, Red Peter, when the work debuted at London’s Young Vic in 2009.
