Plenty of violinists, cellists and even a shakuhachi player have participated in Tokyo Opera City’s B→C (Bach to Contemporary) program, which sees musicians playing one piece by Bach and one by a modern composer. The choice of Lisa Kataoka, however, marks the first time a koto player has been invited. A virtuoso of the massive 17-string instrument, Kataoka has both Eastern and Western pieces in her repertoire and is considered one of koto’s great hopes. Her Bach selection of Cantata No. 68 will be followed by Takashi Yoshimatsu’s 1992 piece Nabari. The program is rounded out by traditional music, with Kataoka joined by koto player Shintaro Okamura and shakuhachi whiz Dozan Fujiwara.
