Count Me In

An excellent way to annoy your neighbors

Ginger Baker, Cindy Blackman, Art Blakey, Jess Bowen, Stewart Copeland, Taylor Hawkins, Elvin Jones, Keith Moon, Nicko McBrain, Chad Smith, Roger Taylor, Buddy Rich, Max Roach, John Bonham, Dave Grohl, Gene Krupa, Joe Morello, Madden Klass, Ringo Starr, Charlie Watts – and I’m sure I’ve left someone out.

Anyway, if you recognize any of these famous names, it’s an easy guess that this is a documentary about drumming – rock, jazz, techno and rave (but mostly rock). One of the film’s strongest points is its excellent coverage of the women in the drum game.

It’s an energetic, exhilarating celebration of the people who hit stuff with sticks, a real (sorry) toe-tapper. And you don’t need to be a drummer to dig it. And at an hour and 21 minutes, it doesn’t outstay its welcome. (81 min)
