Late Night with the Devil

The Nielsen ploy from hell

I pretty much ignore 95 percent of the horror movies released these days, put off by their tiresome reliance on excessive violence and gore. But occasionally one comes down the pike that understands that true horror is created within the viewer’s mind.

Like this one. A fading 70s late-night talk-show host (a perfectly cast David Dastmalchian) who once rivaled Carson books an interview with an ostensibly possessed child, along with her “handler” and a noted paranormal skeptic. Sure, if you believe in this kind of hogwash, it’s a pretty risky move: On one hand, you could release an apocalyptical evil force on all of mankind. But the upside is a fantastic ratings boost, and, well, it’s sweeps week.

This modest, deliciously creepy little gem is full of surprises and sprinkled with dark humor, mostly at the expense of the nervously swaggering host’s bogus gravitas and naked ambition. The practical special effects largely eschew CGI, spotless attention is paid to ‘70s detail (right down to the 4:5 aspect ratio) and a few knowing running gags make this just a blast to watch.

Another instant classic midnight movie just in time for Halloween!

Gets a little splashy toward the climax, but, well, it is a horror flick. (93 min)
