The Front Runner

Political morality play

In 1988, Democratic presidential favorite Senator Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman) told the press to “follow him around” if they thought he had any secrets to hide. They did, and uncovered an extramarital affair that led to the candidate’s (self) destruction. The scandal forever changed the relationship between the media and politicians. Jason Reitman’s even-handed but somewhat timid film resonates today, if only by reminding us of a more honorable and innocent time when cheating on one’s wife (or second wife, or third) could bring down a politician. Great supporting work by Vera Farmiga and J. K. Simmons. (113 min)
