Ted Kotcheff’s shocking film is quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen

Thought to be lost until recently, Ted Kotcheff’s shocking 1971 Aussie film is quite unlike anything you’ve ever seen. A vacationing schoolteacher (Gary Bond) gets sidetracked in a boozy outback town and loses all his money gambling. He falls in with a vicious band of hard-drinking, kangaroo-massacring sociopaths (including Jack Thompson and the ever-creepy Donald Pleasence), and discovers depths of depravity within himself he never dreamed existed. This intense examination of the ephemeral nature of “civilization” is not an easy sit, but it’s compellingly watchable. Made me want a drink. And a shower. Japanese title: Koya no Chidoriashi.
