The sea is often associated with peace and serenity, but the reality is more complex. On the shoreline, the incessant crashing of waves is testament to the eternal battle with the land, while further out the vastness of the ocean holds a perpetual sense of horror and dread that fuels our sense of the sublime. Fascinated by this potent mixture of aesthetic qualities, Takashi Homma—once fashion photographer for London’s i-D magazine—has increasingly turned his camera to the hypnotic power of the sea. New Waves at 1223 Gendaikaiga Contemporary Painting Museum presents a series of Homma’s latest photos, showing in stunning detail the restless architecture of the waves transfixed and silenced by his lens. The exhibition mainly concentrates on photos taken on the North Shore of Oahu since 2000, but also includes several taken in Europe.
