Top off your hatsumode—first shrine visit of the year—at Meiji Jingu with a look at the nearby Ota museum’s exhibition of New Year-themed ukiyo-e prints. It was—and still is—considered auspicious to have Mt. Fuji appear in your first dream of the year (hatsuyume). Appropriately, Hokusai’s iconic wave image from his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series is on display. Also portentous is the first sunrise of the year or hatsuhinode, represented in the show by Hiroshige’s Suzaki Hatsuhinode from his renowned series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo.
