Even dedicated iPhone fans will admit that the lack of video calls on the handset is a major drawback, so it comes as a relief that a Japanese firm has rolled out the world’s first app that offers those very video hookups without jailbreaking the Apple gadget.

Yudo’s LiveLink 3G costs ¥1,000 (sometimes, they make it free just for the hell of it, BTW) and, to get around the handicap of not being able to direct-dial a video call, lets two users find each other using a common keyword.

The software works remarkably well, but be warned that the lack of a forward-facing camera on the iPhone means you’ll spend the conversation looking out the back of your partner’s handset. Ideal for online walking tours, perhaps?
