While the media has been busy salivating over the cheap and cheerful pleasures of “fast fashion,” a smaller but more encouraging trend is emerging. Head to the grungy streets of Shimokitazawa or Koenji and you’ll find examples of Tokyo’s “remake” (rimeiku) scene, where intrepid style hounds refashion unwanted clothes into new garments and accessories. It’s easy to get started, and you won’t even need a sewing machine (though it helps). If you want some pointers, check websites like www.cutoutandkeep.net, which have masses of illustrated tutorials. Closer to home, the “Remake and Handmade” community on SNS site Mixi has over 7,400 members, and you’ll find Japanese-language tips at www.rimeiku.com.
