After “a month of four hours of sleep nightly, much caffeine and loud music,” organizer Cal Lyall finally whittled down 50 events’ worth of music from his monthly experimental Test Tone series into a three-disc anthology of live recordings. Lyall and friends Tatsuhisa Yamamoto + Imai Kazuo (above), L?K?O and many more celebrate the release at the event’s home in Nishi-Azabu. Since its launch, Test Tone has provided a venue for “marginalized musicians” to bring their ideas to a larger creative community, ranging from electronic music to noise and jazz—all the while “eliminating monetary friction at the door,” i.e. offering free entry.
