In this direct-to-video American remake of a 2001 German flick, volunteers for a sociological experiment are divided into two groups, prisoners and guards, and placed in a prison environment. All they have to do to earn $14,000 each is abide by a set of rules for two weeks. Pacifist Adrien Brody falls into the first group, timid Catholic Forest Whitaker the latter. Well, you know it’s going to be Lord of the Flies time soon, and it is, but the characters are not developed enough to explain why. Film sees itself as a sharp and shocking commentary on the callousness of human nature. Falls way short.
