2011 has been proclaimed French Dance Year in Japan, and the celebration kicks off with a piece based on kagura, an ancient ritual performance that enacts episodes from Shinto mythology. American-French dancer-choreographer Susan Buirge first took an interest in the form while living in Kyoto during the ’90s. An influential founding figure in the Nouvelle Danse movement, Buirge (above) has been residing on-and-off in Japan for years, and is currently based in a coastal town in Shimane. She heads to the French Institute in Iidabashi to stage a trio of solo dances, representing three different geographic locales, with taiko accompaniment by Yu Imafuku.
