Kaiji Moriyama is that rare creature—a contemporary dancer who has been able to forge a successful solo career. Coming to dance at the comparatively late age of 21, he wowed audiences and critics worldwide with his 2005 piece Katana, aptly named for the dancer’s acrobatic ability to slice the air with his body. He is also beloved by toddlers and moms across Japan for his interactions with children on the morning NHK program Karada de Asobo. With Tsubasa (“Wing”), Moriyama hopes to live down the mixed reviews that greeted his last piece, The Velvet Rope, by reprising the work with which he launched his solo career a decade ago.
