Some iconic movie characters should stay in retirement or, in Gordon Gekko’s case, prison. In this sequel to Wall Street, Gekko (Michael Douglas) has done his time for the crime, and has come back to the Street to preach to us about the 2008 crash. He’s a watered-down version of the 1987 Gekko we loved to hate, but he’s still the movie’s only interesting character. For lengthy periods when he’s not on the screen, this unfocused and too-long mess rambles into uneven, shallow melodrama. If this movie were a financial offering, it would be a derivative; investing your time in it will bring minimal returns.
