I enjoy a good gadget as much as the next man, but it’s always preferable if the device meets a need, rather than offering a solution that’s looking for a problem. Hence, it’s hard to get terribly enthusiastic about Sanyo’s new Xacti DMX-CA100 camcorder, which is “the world’s first waterproof full HD dual camera that can be used underwater.”
Sure, I know there are divers who will be getting their fins in a twist about what a dream come true the ¥40,000 camera might be; still, I just wonder if the depth limit of 3m is of use to anyone. That caveat aside, the specs are impressive—14-megapixel stills and full HD (1920×1080) video. But who’s gonna use it? Paddling-depth chikan on Enoshima this summer? Ugh.
