The oft-maligned Tokyo International Film Festival has made great strides in its recent programming. For this year’s competition section, 2002 winner Nir Bergman returns with Intimate Grammar, a coming-of-age tale set in the ’60s that took top prize at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Other films to keep an eye out for include Brighton Rock (pictured), based on Graham Greene’s classic novel, and Iranian director Hamid Reza Aligholian’s Flamingo No. 13, a surreal drama dealing with the theme of exile. Try to score a ticket for festival opener The Social Network—it’s hot in the US right now. In all, TIFF promises nine days of cinematic splendor.
