A night of clubbing these days is bound to cover territory from house and electro to techno, rock, hip-hop and beyond. So it’s easy to forget that when New York DJ Tim Sweeney first got behind the decks a decade ago, turntablists were competing to forge seamless mixes via the magic of beat-matching. Through his “Beats in Space” radio show and riotous club sets, Sweeney introduced dance music fans to a world where just about any genre was ruthlessly, if lovingly, thrown into the blender. Part of the coterie behind New York’s key DFA imprint, the DJ arrives with a special friend in the form of style arbiter and vocalist Kim Ann Foxman of alt-disco group Hercules and Love Affair (right).
