Mitama Matsuri
Jul 13, 2026 at 9:00am ~ Jul 16, 2026 at 8:30pm
Mitama Matsuri takes place at Yasukuni Shrine, transforming the shrine grounds into one of Tokyo’s most visually striking summer events. Known for its thousands of illuminated lanterns, the festival creates a calm and reflective atmosphere that sets it apart from louder seasonal celebrations.
The event centers on honoring ancestral spirits, with lanterns lining the pathways and main approach to the shrine. As evening falls, the soft glow of the lights defines the experience, while traditional performances and food stalls add to the setting without overwhelming it.
Mitama Matsuri schedule:
July 13, 2026 09:00 – July 16, 2026 21:30
Lantern illumination runs daily from around 18:00 to 21:30. Major processions typically include mikoshi on July 13 and 15 at 18:30, along with Aomori Nebuta and Awa Odori performances on July 14 from around 18:30.
Visitors should arrive before dusk to experience the transition into the evening atmosphere. The festival offers a quieter alternative to more energetic summer matsuri while still showcasing traditional elements and seasonal food stalls.
