Mori Art Award 2026 Grand Prize Exhibition: Katayama Mari

Oct 31, 2026 at 10:00am ~ Mar 28, 2027 at 10:00pm

The Mori Contemporary Art Foundation and Mori Art Museum will present a solo exhibition of work by Katayama Mari, winner of the inaugural Mori Art Award Grand Prize, running October 31, 2026, through March 28, 2027.

The biennial award, launched in 2025, recognizes mid-career artists working in Japan or with strong ties to the country. A shortlist drawn up by Japan-based curators is narrowed by an international jury to four finalists, who present in person before a winner is chosen. The Grand Prize comes with ¥10 million and a joint exhibition with the museum; the three runners-up each receive ¥1 million.

Katayama, known for combining analogue photography with embroidery and other handcraft techniques, was recognized for work that pushes against the limits of her own body. The show centers on her ongoing tree of life series, now held in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection — a key factor in her selection.

Ticket prices vary by day and age group. Check the website for details.
