Theater, Dance, Music ―Edo Performing Arts by Hokusai

Mar 19, 2024 at 9:30am ~ May 26, 2024 at 5:30pm

While he has now earned worldwide acclaim, Hokusai too was once a novice. In his early artworks, he has created a large volume of works related to the theater, including music and dance. This exhibition at the Sumida Hokusai Museum presents works that make us appreciate Hokusai’s deep connections to the theater, including actor prints from his Shunrō period, and privately commissioned prints created as invitations to musical and other performances. His depiction of the “sparrow dance” and its incorporation in many craft objects in particular is a must-see. Through these many works, enjoy his vast-ranging oeuvre!
