Japanese minyo folk music has seen a great resurgence of late, but the question remains how to bring it into the 21st century. Hidden Dragon is a project that attempts to create a new folk music by reconstructing the Japanese folk music vocabulary. In other words, they play traditional instruments in untraditional ways. The group consists of percussionists/vocalists Shigeri Kitsu and Kazuki Kunihiro along with tsugaru shamisen (traditional banjo of northern Japan) player Nobuto Yamanaka. It recently returned from touring Central Asia with the Japan Foundation.
