Despite the resignation of legend Yoshito Ohno, younger exponents of Japan’s avant-garde dance form butoh decided to go ahead with a project that had been in the works since last summer. Hikari Furu Haien (“Light in an Abandoned Garden”) stars and is produced by Takateru Kudo, one of the foremost butoh dancers of his generation and a native of earthquake-hit Sendai. Kudo says at a time when a “landscape of ruins” has emerged, a work about “the ruins that reside within ourselves” takes on particular resonance.
