Set in a Dominican neighborhood in New York, In The Heights is Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway exploration of the trials and tribulations of working-class Latinos. The show won Best Musical at the 2008 Tony Awards and is slated for a movie adaptation next year, and the Japan production is its first foray overseas. In The Heights portrays the struggles of bodega owner Usnavi to return to the Dominican Republic, and of bright young student Nina to fulfill her parents’ dreams of upward mobility, via generous helpings of salsa, meringue and hip-hop.
