Le mari de la coiffeuse (The Hairdresser’s Husband), by prolific French director Patrice Leconte, will screen from January 8 at Shibuya’s Eurospace (1-5 Maruyamacho, Shibuya-ku; www.eurospace.co.jp). The 1990 film (pictured) tells the story of a 12-year-old boy who nurtures a crush on the local hairdresser until his parents bring an end to it. As an adult, he marries another coiffeuse, but finds that fantasy and reality are rarely the same.

We Don’t Care About Music Anyway, a new documentary about Tokyo’s vibrant experimental music scene, will be screened late-night from January 15, also at Eurospace. The film includes interviews with local luminaries Yoshihide Otomo, Hiromichi Sakamoto and many others. Some of the artists appearing in the film will perform at an event on January 10 at SuperDeluxe. See below for details.

The French Institute (15 Ichigaya-Funagawaramachi, Shinjuku-ku; www.institut.jp) will run a retrospective of films by French actor-director Mathieu Amalric, known to international audiences as James Bond’s antagonist in Quantum of Solace (2008). The program includes Amalric’s latest work as a director, Tournée (2010), in which he plays the manager of an aging group of American burlesque dancers touring France.
