Two years ago, widely traveled butoh dancer Taketeru Kudo and Japanese kagura musician Gaishi Ishizaka teamed up to create an unorthodox collaboration of avant-garde dance and traditional Asian percussion, which duly made waves in the contemporary dance scene. The fascinating pair are to recreate that magical meeting this month with Akaganekishi—The Copper Cavalier. The title refers to the 30-kilogram gongs, mainly of Indonesian origin, which Ishizaka will employ to generate the hypnotic and resonant sounds to which the tightly muscled Kudo will dance.
