Liars were one of the first bands to emerge from the fecund Brooklyn dance-punk scene at the dawn of the ’00s—and perhaps the artiest. Angus Andrew (vocals/guitar), Aaron Hemphill (percussion, guitar, synth) and Julian Gross (drums) have been constantly reinventing themselves since they first got together in 2000. Each record is a marked departure from the last, ranging from the ethereal sounds of 2006’s Drum’s Not Dead to a bizarre concept album about witchcraft. Their latest, the darkly hypnotic Sisterworld, includes a bonus disc featuring remixes from Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, among others. Catch the band as they return to Japan for the first time since backing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs here in 2003.
