Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Impressive visuals but narratively threadbare

Thomas and his band of maze-bound heroes apparently jumped from the frying pan to the fire at the end of Maze Runner, and here they mostly continue to jump from various frying pans into a variety of fires. No mazes; lotsa running. From electrical storms, storm troopers, and even fast-moving zombies.

Most dystopian YA adventure trilogies resort to filler in the middle movie (Insurgent), but this narratively threadbare entry is moving so fast that it’s not immediately apparent that it’s mostly spinning its wheels. Bright spots: Giancarlo Esposito and Rosa Salazar join the cast. Impressive visuals. Japanese title: Maze Runner 2: Sabaku no Meikyu. (132 min)
