Dreamin’ Wild

The agony of belated success

It’s a true story. Back in the 70s, teenagers Donnie and Joe Emerson recorded an album of their own music. It sank without a trace, but only after a slimy vanity producer took all their unwaveringly supportive family’s money. Now, 30 years later, another producer shows up at their Washington farm saying the album had been discovered in an obscure used-vinyl store and is getting a lot of attention. Donnie is unsurprisingly doubtful.

The uniformly strong cast includes Casey Affleck as Donnie, withNoah Jupe doing the teenage years. Walton Goggins is Joe, withJack Dylan Grazer. Chris Messina is the producer, and an underused Zooey Deschanel Donnie’s wife. The treat here is BeauBridges, going deep as the father and doing his finest work sinceThe Fabulous Baker Boys.

This is a warm meditation on creativity, the pain of failure, the pitfalls of sudden success, and the strength of loyalty and family support. Director Bill Pohlad, who gave us the wonderful Love & Mercy, avoids melodrama by keeping things restrained, the performances understated. This may make it too slow for some, but it will resonate with, well, anyone who has a family. (111 min)
