A director reborn

In Paul Schrader’s stunning new film (never better), Ethan Hawke (ditto) plays the tormented, disillusioned pastor of a small Dutch Reformed church that’s about to celebrate 250 years but which now serves mainly as a tourist attraction. The intellectually prodigious Schrader never misses a beat as this man of God stares into the abyss, and addresses such issues as morality, politics, ethics, radical environmentalism and domestic terrorism, all the while dissecting the hypocrisies (and virtues) of Christianity.  Also a nuanced performance from Amanda Seyfried. Clearly this is not an easy sit. See it anyway. (113 min)
