A soul-sick hit man (Ben Foster) dying of lung cancer accepts one last job from a New Orleans mob boss only to find that it’s a setup. He manages to outsmart his would-be assassins but in the process reluctantly rescues a teenage hooker (Elle Fanning) who was being held captive. This road noir flick adds little to the pulpy genre, but it’s well worth seeing for the performances of the two leads, both in top form, and for the deft and confident direction by French actress Melanie Laurent. And if there are a few flaws, well, Nic Pizzolato’s novels have defeated far more seasoned filmmakers. (91 min)
