Thriving in areas around the Gulf of Mexico in 1200 BC, the Olmec is considered the first major civilization in the Americas, preceding even the Mayans. As part of the year-long celebrations feting the 400th anniversary of Japan-Mexico ties, this exhibition offers glimpses into Olmeca life and culture. Among the pieces on display are some of the finest in pre-Columbian art, including colossal stone heads, jaguar idols, items made of precious jade, colored pottery and clay figures.
