Californian violinist Paul Dateh seemed to be your stereotypical Asian-American classical music prodigy. But instead of fulfilling his destiny as a concert violinist, he ditched classical for jazz studies on entering the University of Southern California’s elite Thornton School of Music. The result is a brief but diverse career that now brings him to Japan, where he will be displaying his eclectic blend of jazz, folk and hip-hop—and his abilities not only on the violin but also before the microphone. For a sample, check one of the Dateh YouTube videos that have been seen by millions or download his self-titled debut album.
