It’s been called “comedic storytelling” and “Japanese standup”—but whatever the description, a skilled rakugo performance is just about one of the funniest things on the planet. Only problem is, the fast-paced wordplay and, often, the heavy use of Osaka-ben makes the art form incomprehensible to all but the most fluent of non-native speakers. Enter Bunkyo University professor Kimie Oshima, a linguist and rakugo-ka who’s made it her mission to spread the funny across the world. Join her this Saturday, July 3 at Sakura Café in Hatagaya for a special English-language rakugo performance followed by a short musical presentation (¥500).
