Two hours of busy, self-important, engorged romantic melodrama that’s so sappy I was surprised it wasn’t a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. Twilight’s Robert Pattinson plays (surprise!) a brooding loner with daddy issues who tries to get back at a cop with whom he had a run-in by seducing the man’s daughter (Emilie de Ravin). Of course they fall in love. Pattinson is clearly shooting for a classic, angry James Dean but achieves only a peeved Ben Affleck. It’s an embarrassing performance, especially opposite real actors like Chris Cooper and Pierce Brosnan. Misconceived, shockingly exploitative ending.
