A phalanx of ballet luminaries descends on Tokyo for three days of gala performances next month. The cast is headed up by Kazakh-born Farouk Ruzimatov, the 46-year-old artistic director of Russia’s Mikhailovsky Theatre. Ruzimatov is slated to perform in the exotic Scheherazade alongside Elena Filipieva of the Kiev Ballet (left), which is providing the bulk of the 50-strong cast for The Essence of Ballet. And if you didn’t get to see her recent swan song as principal of the English Royal Ballet, Miyako Yoshida will be on hand to dance the grand pas de deux from the chestnut Raymonda.
