One of the United States’ most extensive collections of modern art is in Japan for the first time. The Phillips Collection in Washington DC was the nation’s first modern art museum when it opened its doors in 1921. Among the nearly 100 works by 68 artists now on display in “To See as Artists See” at the lofty National Art Center are outstanding paintings by Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Milton Avery, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Motherwell and many other important artists.

The National Art Center, Tokyo, through Dec 12 (listing).
