The Signal

Not great, but thought-provoking and intelligent

A trio of graduate students driving from Massachusetts to California stop in Nevada to follow the signal of a mysterious hacker who’s been taunting them since they left. They find an empty shack, black out, and wake up in a strange lab being examined by Laurence Fishburne in a hazmat suit.

This cinematic puzzle continues to defy expectations as it genre-hops from Blair Witch to alien abduction to TRON, all the way to its inconclusive conclusion. Not great, but it’s thought-provoking and intelligent, and director-to-watch William Eubank does a lot with a tiny budget, so look at this as a calling card. (97 min)
