While the rest of the world went for the slack rhythms and stomach-churning bass of dubstep, UK drum ‘n’ bass producer Optical was headed the opposite direction. Along with studio partner-in-crime Ed Rush, the guest at Womb’s upcoming O6S monthly was creating punishing rhythmic outings cluttered with claustrophobic synths and only the merest hint of a bass line. Optical (Matt Quinn) brings the sounds of his Virus Recordings to resident Womb DJ Aki’s long-running d’n’b showcase for a taste of how the UK scene is responding to the dubstep revolution—if at all.
