When approaching German composer Gustav Mahler’s celebrated work Song of the Earth and its climactic Abschied, or “Farewell,” choreographers Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Jérôme Bel (above) were concerned with just one question: how to do it justice? Their convoluted answer, provided in the form of dialog, dance and a live musical performance, was to not even try. Instead, the duo have created a memorable “meta” piece that pays roundabout homage to Mahler without actually dramatizing his work.
