Dub, the psychedelic instrumental offshoot of Jamaican reggae, has no shortage of practitioners in Japan. One of the leading groups to put its own twist on the form is Arakajime Kimerareta Koibitotachi E (roughly “for pre-determined lovers”). Based in the western suburbs, “Arakoi” begin with pneumatic bass lines, hypnotic beats and that most archetypal of dub instruments, the humble melodica. As their latest album Kara shows, they then top it up with rock, noise and ambient improvisations for a 21st-century Tokyo twist. For their first “one man live” at tastemaking venue O-Nest, Arakoi present “Dubbing 01”—hopefully the first in a long line of domestic dub nights.
