Maybe it was the beards that stopped CocoRosie’s most recent album, the woozy and occasionally brilliant Grey Oceans, from gaining a wider audience. Then again, siblings Bianca and Sierra Casady have never gone out of their way to ingratiate themselves. The duo concoct a musical Marmite of psychedelic folk, nursery rhymes and hip-hop, with Sierra’s classically trained voice and harp offering a counterpoint to Bianca’s electronics and cracked little-girl vocals. Despite notching up four albums to date, CocoRosie’s upcoming live date in Tokyo will be the first time they’ve played in Japan. Just to make sure people notice they’re here, the show will coincide with an exhibition of Bianca’s art work, entitled “Hood Lum (après noir),” which runs at Shibuya art lounge Sunday Issue from January 9-30.
