Japan’s DJ Kentaro sealed his reputation as a scratch artist of the first order when he won the 2002 DMC World DJ Final at age 20. But he’s also proved himself an adept producer, becoming one of a very few to make the transition from turntable jock to “artist.” Out on key UK electronica imprint Ninja Tune, Kentaro’s second proper producer album shows off his eclectic tastes in bass music. “Kikkake” featuring fellow Japanese scratch legend Krush is a dramatic affair that layers synths and strings over a dubstep substrata. Several tracks sport guests, including the volatile breakbeats outing “North South East West” featuring Matrix & Futurebound and the techtonic raga of “Big Timer” with MC Zulu. A pack of domestic bass music heavies including Krush, along with UK hip-hop/grime group Foreign Beggars help Kentaro celebrate in a bass music all-nighter at Ageha.
